Can We Talk About CSE ?

On May 22nd, the CSE Online Toolkit for Northamptonshire was launched at a conference attended by over 600 professionals from across all agencies.  The day helped enable lots of talking about CSE which affects so many children, and has done for so decades.  I hope the beginnings of effectively addressing CSE starts with talking about it – “We can talk with someone about anything, even if it feels awful or small.”  Spending a day in Oxford recently, one of my children asked “So they’ve got rid of CSE here, now haven’t they Mum?”  I explained it is addressed more proactively there now,  and thought how amazing that children can talk about it freely and have an awareness.  I think too how hopeful it feels to know that more children are growing up knowing they have a right to feel safe and they can talk with someone about anything – including CSE.  Hopefully when the child who asked that question in Oxford is a little older, and she is using social media, and going out independently, that as well as her Protective Behaviours and awareness of her Early Warning Signs to help her feel safe, she can also rely on lots more adults to “say something if they see something.”  (NWG for CSE)
